While The Shining was released 35 years ago, the movie’s setting at the spooky desolate Overtook Hotel, which is actually the Stanley Hotel, has remained in the spotlight as horror fanatics make the pilgrimage to its Colorado location. And while the hotel has enjoyed years of business since it first opened its doors in 1909, the Stanley Hotel revealed plans for a $24 million redevelopment—transforming the location into the Stanley Film Center (after Stanley Kubrick who directed the film). Within the private-public reboot, the center will contain a horror-themed museum, an auditorium, traveling exhibits, and a soundstage and production space. Already A-listers are part of the center’s board, including Elijah Wood and Simon Pegg.
The film, based on the Stephen King novel, has already created a scary industry in the small town. The hotel is currently hosting “3 Nights of Fright,” a horror-themed ball, and a scary-movie film festival.
